I am very excited for the opportunity to share words of Torah with you. Each week, in this spot, I look to share an idea I've found that speaks to me and that I think will resonate with you as well. This week, I share with you an excerpt of an article by Rabbi Dr. Abraham Twerski Z"L entitled "Maximizing Faith" giving us a fascinating approach to understanding Avraham's faith in HaShem.
And he trusted in God, and God reckoned (it to him as righteousness 15:6) The Torah tells us that God considered the patriarch Abraham’s faith to be meritorious. But let us reflect a moment. If God spoke to any of us, would we not have an unshakeable faith? In what way is Abraham praiseworthy for believing in God with Whom he communicated directly? [...]
The answer was given by Rabbi Mordechai of Lechovitz, who cited the Talmud that at the end of a person’s life when he stands before God, he will be asked, “Did you transact in faith?” (Shabbos 31a). This is usually understood as asking whether one transacted business honestly. Rabbi Mordechai said that it has an additional meaning. When a person transacts in business, he negotiates and tries in every way to maximize his profit. He does not settle for a meager gain. [T]his is what one will be asked at the end of his life: “Did you transact in faith?” i.e., did you do everything possible to maximize your faith, or did you just accept whatever you were given?
Abraham [...] transacted in faith. [He], of course, knew there was a God. [He] did not have to have faith in His existence. But [he] tried to strengthen [his] faith by coming to an ever greater knowledge of God, and believing even that which [he] could not see about God.
Some people take their faith in God for granted. Of course they believe that there is a God. But they may not have gone beyond that to try to know more and more about God. We have great works available to us to increase our faith and broaden our concept of God. If we fail to do so, we will have no answer when we are asked, “Did you seek to improve the quality of your faith? Did you transact in faith?”
I believe that, in addition to our general experience and the opportunities we have through study to enhance our faith, the moments we are living through right now present us with a new appreciation for this question: "Did you transact with faith?" Personally, this is something that I have been thinking about a great deal. We must strengthen our Emunah in this time as we realize that there is no one to depend on other than HaShem - אין לנו על מי להישען אלא על אבינו שבשמים!
Hoping and praying for a Shabbat Shalom in every sense of the term, Rabbi Davies Rabbi@SOICherryHill.org

Security Incidents There were two security incidents that occurred this past week. A young man was sitting outside the building one morning. He was approached by a member and one of our guards. It was determined this young man was no threat to our congregation. He moved along without any trouble. While trying to cross Cooper Landing Road one of our members had the unfortunate occasion to have anti-semitic epithets yelled at them from a passing car. Of course they were shaken up by the incident. Please report any and all incidents to Sam Tilonsky (drsamod@gmail.com) and John Moyer, JFeds Deputy Director of Intelligence (jmeyer@jfedsnj.org). Thanks!
