I am very excited for the opportunity to share words of Torah with you. Each week, in this spot, I look to share an idea I've found that speaks to me and that I think will resonate with you as well. This week, I share with you an article by Shoshanna Dresner entitled "Don't Just Criticize, Help", taking example from Yitro and what merited him to add a section to the Torah.
Yitro saw that his son-in-law Moses was judging the entire Jewish nation by himself, and understood that this was not good for Moses, nor the people. He points out to him, "The thing that you are doing is not good…" (Exodus, 18:17). It would have been easy for Yitro to stop here, to see something not going well, to criticize, and then move on. But he continues and tries to help by offering a constructive suggestion: "…I will advise you…"(ibid, 18:19).
The Sifre explains that Yitro’s advice caused an extra section to be added to the Torah (which is why one of his names was Yeter – which means extra), and explains that the added section begins with his advice on how to make the situation better, rather than the beginning of the conversation. Rabbi Meir Shapiro explains that merely criticizing someone does not merit the adding of a section in the Torah. But constructive advice – that is worthy of a section!
How often do we just find fault with the actions of others and are quick to criticize or complain, and leave it at that? We don't actually try to help. It can be easy to point out problems, but a giver will not just stop there. A giver sees someone struggling, notice something going wrong, and works on finding a solution. Hoping and praying for a Shabbat Shalom in every sense of the term, Rabbi Davies Rabbi@SOICherryHill.org
We are excited to be partnering with Mizrachi World Movement to provide their publication of HaMizrachi Parasha Weekly.

Mission to Israel
Right now, as many people as possible should go to Israel to see what happened and what is happening there, and to speak to the people there who have and continue to experience challenging and, at the same time, deeply meaningful times.
We are gauging interest in the possibility of a community mission. This would be a joint venture between Sons of Israel and Young Israel of Cherry Hill and coordinated by World Mizrachi. Please click the link below and fill out the survey so that we can see how to move forward with this initiative.
Deadline to submit survey is end of the day today, February 1st.
The Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey is hosting Community Conversations to better understand the needs and desires for engagement in our local Jewish community. The information learned in these sessions will assist the Federation in planning future programs and services based on the shared values and needs of our community. Our shul has been invited to participate in a Community Conversation which will be held on February 13th at 8:00pm at SOI. If you would like to participate, please contact Gail Belfer at gbelfer@jfedsnj.org
