I am very excited for the opportunity to share words of Torah with you. Each week, in this spot, I look to share an idea I've found that speaks to me and that I think will resonate with you as well. This week, I share with you an excerpt from an article by Rabbi Shaul Rosenblatt entitled "The Jewish Example" about what it takes to sanctify G-d's name - Kiddush HaShem.
In this week's portion, we find the commandment to sanctify God's name - Kiddush Hashem. In essence, this entails living in such a way that others recognize Godliness in our actions and feel drawn to act similarly.
Specifically, Maimonides talks about someone who is scrupulously honest in his business dealings, speaks softly and kindly with people, greets people with a smile, and honors even those who put him down. These are just examples. The principle of Kiddush Hashem is that of wishing to set an example that others might follow.
And it is the essence of what Judaism is about. Sanctifying God's name is one of the rare commands that one is required to give one's life for (in extreme circumstances). God talks about the idea with Abraham. At Mount Sinai, God tells the Jewish people that it is their national purpose. It is discussed all through the prophets. It is the end goal of all of Judaism - that its adherents should act in such a way that others understand the concepts of ethical monotheism simply by being around them.
[...] A religion must speak its truth only through the actions of those who live by it. If our example alone does not inspire others, then our religion is not worth sharing. [...] If Judaism is to attract a generation of disaffiliated young Jews, it must return to its roots. If those who kept Judaism were clearly Godly, spiritual, enlightened, honest and decent human beings, I believe that people would come flocking to find out what they were doing right. This is the mitzvah of Kiddush Hashem, and Judaism is very much in need of its practitioners.
Help us honor and thank this year's honorees for everything they do for our shul and our community by participating today! The deadline to purchase tickets is this Monday, May 20th at 5:00pm.

Nursing Rooms At SOI Baruch Hashem, our shul has seen the birth of many babies! We want to take this opportunity to remind our members and visitors that the Bridal Room (in the hallway behind the office) and Simcha Room (in the hallway at the back of the social hall) are available as nursing rooms. Please see Ora Davies or Alise Panitch for the codes to these rooms. We kindly ask that others do not make use of these rooms for other purposes on Shabbat or Yom Tov. (Please note that the Simcha Room is accessed for kiddush purposes on Shabbat between 11:30-12:30pm. We are working on finding alternative solutions to alleviate that concern.) Additionally, we are happy to provide baby changing tables in both the women’s room and men’s room.
Booksmiles Collection Doing some spring cleaning? Grant Provda is organizing a book drive for a local organization called Booksmiles.
