We are pleased to have SOI participating in The Simchat Torah Project. The cost of the project for our community is approximately $5,000, which will cover a) the cost of one Torah cover b) all ground and travel costs of the two-day conference and global launch in Israel c) materials about the person you are remembering, for display on Simchat Torah. The initial deadline was Shavuot, but given the overwhelming global response of organizations wanting to be a part of this monumental idea, Mizrachi has extended to July 21st. We are excited to have Rabbi and Ora Davies, as our spiritual leaders, representing our community at the launch. We have collected most of the funds needed for this meaningful project for our Shul, but we still have a little more to go. Anyone who can contribute to get us to our goal would be greatly appreciated. Click Here to Contribute
I am very excited for the opportunity to share words of Torah with you. Each week, in this spot, I look to share an idea I've found that speaks to me and that I think will resonate with you as well. This week, I share with you an excerpt from an article by Sarah Maddali entitled "Happiness Breaks All Barriers" analyzing what Moshe's mistake was in hitting the rock.
[...] God tells Moses that because he “did not believe in Me to sanctify Me in the eyes of the Children of Israel” (20:12) he will not be able to bring the Jews into Israel. (20:1-13) How does hitting a rock translate into not believing in God?
The Maharal, a famous Torah commentary, has a beautiful idea that sheds light on this episode. The key he says is how Moses addresses the Jewish people. He calls them ‘rebels’ which reflects that he was upset with them. If one is in a complete state of joy, engrossed in sheer happiness, it is impossible to harbor negative feelings towards anyone in that moment. Joy and anger cannot coexist. As such, Moses anger reflects a lack of happiness. His lack of happiness, says the Maharal, reflects a lack of faith in God.
After God appeared to Moses in the Tent of Meeting and told him that a miracle was going to be performed and water was going to come forth from the rock, Moses should have been ecstatic – God is going to perform a huge miracle for the Jewish people! His faith in God that He was going to create an open miracle to provide for them, should have been so strong that it was as if it already happened. That faith would have led to a boundless happiness, that would have shattered any negativity and anger towards the Jewish people.
[...] What does this mean for us? There is a Jewish saying that simcha, joy, breaks all barriers. If we can maintain a level of simcha that stems from knowing that everything that happens is out of God’s love for me, then all objective annoyances seem negligible. We too can strive towards working on our emunah, faith in God, and simcha so that we also remain unfazed by objective annoyances. When we encounter anything objectively annoying or upsetting, we can frame it that this particular situation was sent to me by God for my benefit out of love for me. That emunah in God, should help bring us to a point of happiness that shatters any negative feelings. [...]
When we increase our joy and create vessels to receive the blessings we show God that we are ready to receive. We show God that we know He is the source and CAN do anything, no matter how improbable. [...] When there is something that we are asking God for – let us learn from this episode. Let us work towards what we desire, knowing that God is our loving and compassionate Father Who wants to grant us all our wishes. As such, if it is good for us, we will receive it. That emunah in God – that He can and will send it to us just as a loving and compassionate Father yearns to shower his children with all their hearts desires – should bring us to a state of simcha. That state of simcha that breaks all barriers that may have been standing in the way of what we were asking for in the first place! Hoping and praying for a Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Davies Rabbi@SOICherryHill.org
