I am very excited for the opportunity to share words of Torah with you. Each week, in this spot, I look to share an idea I've found that speaks to me and that I think will resonate with you as well. This week, I share with you an article by Avraham Kovel entitled "Why Jews Call the Torah 'The Chumash'" which speaks about the significance of our connection with Torah learning throughout the year.
If you were going to write the Torah - the most important book in history - what would you call it? Something epic, right? It would make sense to choose a name that conveys the importance and gravity of the content. Here are some ideas to get your imagination going: The Book of Life, God's Manual for Living, The Word of God, Heaven's Teaching. With so many great names to give, why would Jews call our most holy text "The Chumash" – The Five? That must be one of the worst names of all time! Five? You’re going to call the most important book of all time “Five”?
Okay... let's give our ancient tradition the benefit of the doubt here. There must be a good reason. [...] Let's look at the etymology of the word Chumash (חמש). The Vilna Gaon says that in order to understand the depth of a Hebrew word, we must look at the first two letters of its root. The first two letters of the word Chumash are Chet (ח) and Mem (מ). The two letters together form the word Cham (חם), which means heat, or passion. What's the connection between passion and the five steps of creation?
Have you ever had a test or presentation that you didn't prepare for? You dread the morning. You pray for a snowstorm, sickness, or anything to exempt you and buy you more time. When you don't prepare, you're lethargic, embarrassed, dismissive. When you do prepare, you're excited, energized, and can't wait to put your practiced skills and knowledge to the test. So too, when we've learned the Chumash deeply and understand the five steps to manifesting ultimate greatness, we’ll be excited and passionate about the tests that everyday life has in store for us. Thus, the word Cham, heated passion.
But we can't just leave the letter Shin (ש) at the end of Chumash hanging. Every letter has its role! So what’s the Shin here to teach? The three branches of the Shin represent the three aspects of a human being – body, mind, and soul. Putting it all together, Chumash is the book unlocking our creative, Godly potential and passion in every aspect of our lives - body, mind, and soul.
As we go back to Genesis and restart reading the Torah this week, I wish you the greatest success in your journeys in Chumash this year. [...] May the Torah inspire all of us to become passionate co-creators of life!
Hoping and praying for a Chag Sameach and Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Davies Rabbi@SOICherryHill.org

Cherry Hill School Board Election As part of the ballot on November 5, you will have a chance to vote for up to 3 members of the Cherry Hill School Board. There are nine members of the school board, and 3 are elected each year. Regardless of whether you have children in the Cherry Hill school system, please take the opportunity to learn about these candidates and make a meaningful selection. Unfortunately, since October 7th political and religious issues have become factors that are affecting our community's children. There is currently a lawsuit against the school board for encouraging a hostile anti-semitic environment. https://www.jewishvoicesnj.org/articles/parents-of-victim-of-alleged-antisemitism-file-lawsuit-against-cherry-hill-public-schools/ We should strive to have leaders of the Cherry Hill School Board who will guide our schools to continuing success and ensure an environment that is safe, comfortable and supportive of all students. We can all play a role in promoting this goal. Please help spread awareness of this issue to other Cherry Hill residents. Bios of the candidates can be foundhere.

Website Update: We are pleased to share that thanks to a grant from the Jewish Community Foundation of Southern New Jersey, SOI will be redesigning our website. As a ShulCloud-based site, updates take place in real time. This means that users will see updates to the design, navigation, and pages as they take place in all phases of the project, rather than only once the project is completed. It may take a few months for the website to display in its final form. We look forward to our site being easier to navigate for our members and better communicate what we offer to those seeking information about SOI. We appreciate your patience throughout this process!
