I am very excited for the opportunity to share words of Torah with you. Each week, in this spot, I look to share an idea I've found that speaks to me and that I think will resonate with you as well. This week, I share with you an excerpt from an article by Rabbi Stephen Baars entitled "Self Fulfillment" which shares what we should truly emulate and strive for.
[...] It is a natural consequence that whatever you believe in, like that thing you will become. Whatever you imagine as the highest expression of life is what you will idealize, imitate, seek and desire. If you think movie stars and professional athletes are the epitome of life, then it is they who you will emulate. If you hold them in high esteem because of their ability to toss a ball, then you will define your own life as well by such demeaning definitions. If shallow people are your idols, then shallow will you be.
The path of idol worshipers leads them to become like their idol. The idol has eyes, but sees nothing. The idol worshiper also has eyes, but sees nothing. Such people miss the beauty and meaning of life. How can someone who thinks a piece of wood or stone is the source of all life comprehend how rich and deep life really is? What you "become" results from what you think is at the source of all life. If you think the source of your energy is a dollar, then you'll become a hedonist. It is no wonder, therefore, that in a world of rampant materialism, many people have no more depth than the money they believe will solve all their problems.
[...] If on the other hand, you think that the All Powerful, Eternal, God of infinite understanding and care, is the source of life, then layer after layer of depth, wisdom, beauty and splendor is there for you to hear and see. To reach those depths, we need tools. This is why the Torah - in this week's parsha (Deut. 28:9) - tells us to emulate God. This technique enables us to see the world with a "God like" vision.
Ask yourself: What would God do if He was in your position? Which path would He choose? This identification with God enables you to raise yourself up out of life's pettiness. It gives you a perspective that is impossible to achieve when you are trying to emulate a movie star. If we are striving for the greatest "being" we can be, it has to be a "being like God." Such an achievement simply cannot be topped. How can a person be greater than that? [...] Hoping and praying for a Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Davies Rabbi@SOICherryHill.org
We are excited to be partnering with Mizrachi World Movement to provide their publication of HaMizrachi Parasha Weekly.

As we approach the Yamim Noraim, our thoughts turn towards the drumbeat of Elul: Teshuva, Tefilah, and Tzedaka. In light of the high value of Tzedakah, shuls around the globe appeal to - and depend on - their congregants for generous support at this time of year.
This year, SOI is taking a new approach. Instead of asking multiple times in different ways, through a Kol Nidre appeal, Simchat Torah auctions, and kibbudim bidding, we are turning to you for your High Holiday donation and support just ONCE. This is THE appeal, the 5786 SOI B'Yachad Campaign, and we are asking you to give as generously as you can, even more than in years past, so that our beloved SOI can continue to thrive.
This past weekend while honoring Rabbi Rothman, his vision, and his innumerable contributions towards building the foundation of our community, we heard about how it took a village to turn SOI into the beautiful synagogue and community that we have today.
Sons of Israel is not just a place to daven. It is the beating heart of our community. It is where we come together to celebrate, to support one another, and to grow in Torah and tefillah. None of this would have been possible without the generosity of those community builders who came before us, and continuing to sustain our shul will be impossible without the support of each and every one of our community members. We are always stronger when we stand together. As a community, we can be b'yachad in prayer, b'yachad in our giving, and b’yachad in strengthening our Shul.
Last year, the combined giving during Elul and Tishrei totaled over $39,000. To ensure the future of our Shul, our goal for this year is $65,000. If you'd like to know your total giving from this time period last year in order to give comparably (or hopefully more), please contact Yaelofficeadmin@soicherryhill.org
Please click here to contribute to our 5786 SOI B'Yachad Campaign today. Every donation is crucial, and every increase will make a powerful difference. By completing this campaign at the beginning of the holiday season, we can all focus our energies on our davening, spiritual growth, and enjoyment of the holidays as individuals and as a community.
Please note- If you would like a kibbud for the holidays, you may request it when you make your gift. If more than one person requests the same kibbud, it will be given to the highest donor.
If you haven't had a chance to make your gift by September 15th, one of our board members will reach out personally to connect with you about your contribution. Thank you for stepping up and showing your support at this most important time of year. Together, we can make this SOI B'Yachad Campaign a true success for our entire community.
Mikvah Ohel Leah's annual Elul fundraiser is underway. Through the generous contributions of the members of our community we are able to maintain a beautiful mikvah and strenghten the observance of Taharat Hamishpacha in our community. We are so grateful for your continued support. Thank you and tizku lmitzvot!
