I am very excited for the opportunity to share words of Torah with you. Each week, in this spot, I look to share an idea I've found that speaks to me and that I think will resonate with you as well. This week, I share an excerpt from anarticle by Rabbi Eli Scheller entitled 'Test Time!', which speaks about the importance of being tested.
This week's Torah portion begins with Avraham's first trial: to give up his entire past and follow God's lead to a new land. It was a challenge for Avraham to desert his aged father and leave his homeland. The question arises: since God knows all future events and how every person will respond to any given situation, why was it necessary to test Avraham?
[...]
A test is what brings a person to the next level. Putting everything you know into action makes all the difference. [The Ramban explains that] God knew that Avraham would pass the test. However, He still tested Avraham to enable him to become greater. By Avraham choosing correctly he put his potential into action and made himself into a greater person.
"Lech Lecha" literally means "Go to yourself." A trial brings out the abilities and potential that is buried deep within a person. When a difficult or annoying situation comes your way, instead of thinking, "Oh no, this is not what I need now," you can view it as an opportunity for growth. An opportunity to make yourself into a greater person.
"Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in”. ~Author Unknown
One of the things we always pride ourselves on at SOI is our diversity. There are young families, retired couples, newlyweds, FFB, baltshuvahs, teens and newborns. Involving members from each of these categories is imperative to growing our community. The one thing all these people have in common, they love our shared Shabbos kiddushes.
Among the myriad of meetings, this week we started the conversation about our kitchen and kiddushes. The comraderie that is seen after shul at kiddush is so heart warming. Being outside, people can communicate without the encumbrance of a mask. Many more people are volunteering to help prepare, serve, clean-up and even donate to enhance our kiddushes. This week, the Irwins sponsored kiddush in honor of Tali's engagement.
Having a hot kiddush seems to be a priority, at least from our meeting. We have many talented individuals who are known for their excellent cholent. This past week we were able to sample Heshy Chaitoff's. In the near future hopefully others will volunteer.
Dan Malamud has stepped up to oversee kitchen activities as the Kitchen/Kiddush/Coordinator, or KKC, along with the help of Daniel Drabkin, Adam & Flo Shulman, Meyer Miltz, Debbie Fineberg, Estelle Lerner and Sylvia Levine. We are looking to start teams weekly to prepare kiddush. If you would like to volunteer, have a team, or have some input or information, please reach out to Dan at daniel@furn1.com
On another note: As a reminder, the Yoetzet Initiative of Philadelphia and SNJ will be presenting a forum on October 17th from 10:30-noon in our tents. Please remember to RSVP to Rachael Klein at ray.s.klein@gmail.com.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Sisterhood is planning an informative Zoom program on October 20th - "Women Health and Empowerment" and "Genetics and Breast Cancer". Please register below.

Hope & Healing Program Engages Local Holocaust Survivors
JFCS is committed to improving the quality of life for the approximately 150 Holocaust Survivors who live in South Jersey through a comprehensive array of supportive services, including Kosher meal and grocery deliveries, case management, and counseling. Among the agency’s newer offerings for Survivors is Hope & Healing, a series of person-centered, trauma-informed workshops that aim to boost their engagement and emotional well-being. Initially launched in 2019, Hope & Healing has provided a vital social connection for Survivors during COVID-19, and the program is still going strong. On Tuesday, October 12, clients from the Former Soviet Union participated in an informative program with Dr. Katerina Romanenko, who enlightened the group about Jews and the visual arts. The participants learned about various Jewish artists, including Isidor Kaufmann and Max Lieberman. Dr. Romanenko compared paintings by Jewish and Christian artists, side by side, to demonstrate the differences in their artistic styles. She also compared various environments, specifically England, Germany, and America, to illustrate the impact each county had on its artists. The clients were mesmerized by the wealth of information Dr. Romanenko imparted. To learn more about the Hope & Healing programs, visit https://jfcssnj.org/holocaust-survivor-support/.
