                                       COVID UPDATE - Mask Recommendation
After consultation with the newly reinstituted re-opening committee composed of Rabbi Davies, Dr. Ken Panitch, Dr. Oze Henig, and Debbie Fineberg; and with consideration of the recommendations of the CDC and Rabbi Dr. Glatt of the OU, we strongly recommend the use of masks for all who attend services, even those who have already been vaccinated.

As has been our policy, unvaccinated persons must wear masks when indoors at the SOI campus, including those who have previously had COVID. 

 Let’s all do our part to make Shabbat as safe as can be.

Parking Lot Demolition Update
Please be aware!
For the next few weeks driving around the building will not be possible and access may be limited to the upper lot. Proceed with care, following the markers provided by the construction workers. 

In preparation for the High Holy Days, if you have anything in the coatroom/and or lockers - please collect it. All things left there after August 8th will be donated to Goodwill.

Two weeks in and going strong! Baruch HaShem, there is so much to take in and I look forward to meeting and speaking with each and all of you in the coming weeks and months. I am also very excited for the opportunity to share words of Torah with you. Each week, in this spot, I will look to share an idea I've found that speaks to me and that I think will resonate with you as well. 

​​​​​​​Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Sofer, known as the Ksav Sofer, comments on the final words of the discussion in this week's Parsha about the appointment and responsibilities of a king. The section concludes (Devarim 17:20) "...so that he will prolong years over his kingdom, he and his children amid Israel." The Ksav Sofer states, "If they listen out of love and not fear, the love will not move from his children after him, and this will be what prolongs their days amidst Israel." I saw a beautiful quote from Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks Z"L that expands this message to every family and, I believe, to the community at large - as we all are involved in raising the children of our Shul:

"(T)he most important legacy we can give our children is not money or possessions, but spiritual ideals.
I truly believe that. Give your children too much money or material gifts and you will spoil them. They will grow up unhappy and unfulfilled, and in the long run they won't thank you. It will damage them and your relationship with them... The best things any of us can give our children are values to live by, ideals to aspire to, an identity so that they know who they are, and a religious and moral heritage to guide them through the wilderness of time.
Children grow to fill the space we create for them, and if it's big, they will walk tall. Ideals are big; material possessions are small. Ideals are what make life meaningful. People may envy others for what they earn or own, but they admire others for what they are and what principles they live by -- and it's better to be admired than to be envied."

                  24 More Days until Rosh Hashanah
I am so amazed by the generosity of time and efforts by the membership of this shul.  I went from one meeting to another all day yesterday and each was amazing and productive.  We now have a fantastic Fundraising Committee making plans for the entire year starting with the Holidays.  The Ritual Committee is working furiously to plan for the upcoming High Holidays starting September 6, Labor Day:  davening leaders, location for davening (indoors, out or vasikin), shofar blowings and reinstituting the Shofar Blowers Union, and lulav and etrog sale,  just to name a few components.  We are also dealing with picking of seats, Yizkor Book, Kol HaNaerim, Camp Shofar, honey project,  Kol Nidre Appeal, Presidential State of the Union Speech, sukkah hop, Simchat Torah auction and shtick, and scheduling security, just to name a few.

Unfortunately, we have to take into consideration that this COVID pandemic is not over.  Will we have to social distance again?  Will masks be mandatory?  What about the children?  What about guests that have travelled here?  These are all concerns the COVID Comimitee is dealing with.  We will keep you updated.

On a more personal level, who do we feel comfortable inviting for the holidays?  Can we ask people if they've been vaccinated.  Do we want our children to fly home?  What will we wear?  I need a new hat.  What will I cook?  As a reprieve from the more pressing issues, I am including a great and fun recipe for the whole family.

For the balance of Elul let us all strive to have complete tshuvah and come together as a community for the common good of SOI.

                                                Apple Pastry Roses
Ingredients for 6 apple roses:
 2 red apples                           Puff pastry sheets
½ of Lemon juiced                   Cinnamon (optional)                          
Water                                       Powdered sugar (optional)
3 T. Apricot preserves
Directions:
1.     Slice apple in 1/2. Take out seeds and hard bottom. Slice thinly.
2.     In a bowl ½ filled with water, add the juice from a ½ lemon
3.     Add sliced apples to water/lemon juice mixture and microwave for 3 minutes
4.     Drain out all of the water
5.     In a small bowl, place apricot reserves and 2T water. Microwave for 1 minute
6.     Unwrap one sheet of thawed puff pastry. Dust with flour and roll out thinly.
7.     Cut in 6 strips horozontally
8.     Spread each strip with apricot preserve
9.     Place the apple slices on the dough with skin off of the dough and overlapping (9 pieces)
10.  Sprinkle with cinnamon if wanted and then fold up the other part of the dough over the bottom of the apple slices
11.  Roll from one end to the other, sealing it at the end.
12.   Place in a muffin tin and bake at 375 degrees for 40-45 minutes.

Betsy & Peter Fischer Food Pantries
Due to the slow economic recovery and lingering impacts of the pandemic, the demand for food remains high in our community. With several federal food assistance programs set to conclude this summer, JFCS is aware that many families will struggle to meet the increased demand for food caused by COVID-19. Our Betsy & Peter Fischer Food Pantries are here to help fill that gap. As the only kosher food pantries in South Jersey, we provide non-perishable food and personal care items to food-insecure households in Camden, Burlington, and Gloucester Counties. We are currently making monthly contactless deliveries directly to clients’ homes, and we are willing and able to help more Jewish families in need.
